Ans. Most festivals in Nagaland celebrate agriculture.The hornbill festival is different from other festivals of the state in the sense that unlike other traditional festivals, it is sponsored by the state government especially to promote tourism and the cultural heritage of Nagaland.
2. Why was the hornbill festival initiated by the Government ? What are the highlights of the festival?
ANS:- The government of Nagaland initiated the hornbill festival to promote the cultural heritage of Nagaland. It is held at Naga heritage village, Kisama 12 km from Kohima. The week long festival unites all the tribes of Nagaland , offers an insight into the culture of Nagaland and a closer understanding of the people.
3. When is Onam celebrated?
Ans:- Onam is celebtrated during the Malayalam month of chingam (August-September) and marks the demon king Mahabali's annual visit from patala (the underworld)
It also marks the beginning of the rice harvesting season.The celebrations usually go on for ten days. During this period, the rich cultural heritage of kerala, from the boat races to the delicious traditional cuisine and the dancing, comes out in its best form and spirit.

Ans. Thiruvonam is the last day of Onam. People prepare elaborate dishes for nine course vegetarian meal, called the onam sadya, to convey to the visiting king Bali that the state still enjoys the same level of prosperity as it did during his rule.

(b). Onamsadya:- This is nine course vegetarian meal prepared on thiruvonam. The main purpose behind this is to convery to king Bali that this kingdom and people are still as prosperous as they were during his reign.
(c). Vallamkalli:- This is snake boat race that is held in which men compete in terms to row to the finish. The most popular of the races held in the state is the Aranmula boat race organized near Arunmula temple,about 128 km from the capital city of Thiruvunanpuram.
Its is also the oldest river boat race held in the state. On the days of the race, people flock to the banks to witness the fiesta making it a certified state sport event.
(d). Pulikali:- It is a colourful dance of Kerala were dancers wear loud masks usually resembling that of a tiger's face. They can also paint their entire bodies to resemble a tiger's stripes. This dance form is characterized by aggressive, animalistic moves. During Onam , the dancers go from door to door entertaining people and collecting gifts in return.
