Answer: Mriganko Babu was a famous and popular writer. A club in Durgapur invited him to a cultural function in order to felicitate him. Accordingly, he went to Durgapur to attend the function and accept the felicitation.

Mriganko Babu was a famous and popular writer of Bengal. He went to Durgapur because he had been invited by a club in Durgapur to attend a cultural function and get felicitation.
2. What happened to him on his way back to Kolkata?
Answer:
On his way back to Kolkata, his Mriganko Babu car ran out of petrol.
3. What attracted Mriganko Babu to the scarecrow?
Answer:
The red and black printed shirt that had been placed over the structure attracted Mriganko Babu. It was this shirt that reminded him of someone.
4. What changes did Mriganko Babu notice in the scarecrow?
Answer:
Mriganko Babu noticed many changes in the appearance of the scarecrow- the two arms of it lowered a little, the bamboo poles seemed two legs and the black earthen pot seemed much smaller. He even saw it advancing towards him.
5. Who was Abhiram? Why had he lost his job in Mriganko Babu's house?
Answer:
Abhiram was servant of Mriganko Babu who had served his family for twenty years. But he was lost his job on the charge of stealing a gold watch of Mriganko Babu.

Abhiram was the servant of Mriganko Babu. He lost his job because he was blamed of stealing Mriganko Babu's watch.
6. 'Now I have found peace, ' How did Abhiram find peace?
Answer: Abhiram found peace and relief by telling the truth of watch to Mriganko Babu.

1. The writer says about Mriganko Babu, 'He was not one to believe in superstitions, and certainly never consulted the almanac before travelling anywhere.' What is his tone?

Give reasons for your answer.
Answer: Writer's tone is both critical and serious. Mriganko Babu did not believe in superstitions, but when his car ran out of petrol, he began to think if he had consulted the almanac that day, he would have avoided the undertaking journey.
2. Abhiram is nothing but the product of Mriganko Babu's imagination. Do you agree with this statement? Why/Why not?
Answer: Yes, we agree that Abhiram is nothing but the product of Mriganko imagination. A scarecrow does not come to life and speaks like a human being. But in the story we see that the scarecrow comes to the life and speaks in human voice in the person of Abhiram. The story does not seem convincing. Hence imaginative touch is found not only in the character of Abhiram but also in other events of the story.
