Answer : The little ones spend the day in dismay and sighing in the school.
2. What happens when the schoolboy sits 'drooping'?
Answer : The boy has to spend many hours in anxiety when he sits drooping.
3. What does the phrase "fears annoy' mean? What happens to a child when 'fears annoy?
Answer : 'Fears annoy' means "the child fears from his teacher who annoys him a lot'.The child feels like a helpless bird singing in the cage.
4. To whom does the schoolboy address his final question?
Answer : He address his parents.
B. Answer the questions with reference to context.
1. But to go to school in a summer mom,
O it drives all joy away.
a Who is the speaker in these lines?
Answer: A schoolboy
b. What are the joys of a summer mor that the speaker had described?
Answer: Morning scene, Birds sing on every trees and skylark sings with him are the joys.
c. Whose "cruel eye' is being referred to later in the stanza? Why has such a phrase been used?
Answer : 'Cruel eye' is being referred to 'cruel old teacher' because the child has dull/uninspiring life at school with lots of work and no play.

And blossoms blown away;
a. Whom does the poet refer to as 'buds' and 'blossoms'?
Answer : The poet refers to schoolboy and his development.
b. Name the literary device used in this stanza. What are the two things being compared?
Answer: Literary device is 'Alliteration' due to repetition of 'b' and 'personification' due
to bud compared with boy . Child is compared with buds.
c. Identify any two words that have a negative connotation in this stanza and write their meanings
Answers :
Nipped means - cut down
away means - put far
3. Or how shall we gather what griefs destroy,
Or bless the mellowing year,
When the blasts of winter appear?
a. Who is being referred to as 'we' in the given lines? How would they bless the

b. Explain what the poet means by 'blasts of winter'.
c. What do summer and winter stand for in this stanza?

2. Contrast the mood of the schoolboy in the first and the second stanza. Mention one phrase from each stanza that reflects his changed mood.
Answer : In the first stanza he was glad.
"sweet company” In the second stanza
he was sad. "drives all joy”
3. Do you think students are likely to learn more in the midst of nature rather than in a classroom, or would a balanced approach be more useful? Give reasons for your answer.
